Hi, I'm Ruth and this is my fashion friendly website! I love high fashion, retro fashion, and just everyday fashion. I think clothes give us a way to express who we are and who we want to be! All my best, ~Ruth

Hello Lovelies,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Valentine’s Day♥ with a special someone or spent time with family or friends.  I got to enjoy a long weekend with my family.  Today’s post is going to be featuring fashion of the 1930s and we’ll be focusing on dresses.  I decided each week will be a new decade but it will feature dresses since it’s my favorite piece of clothing!

Hello Lovelies,

Happy Friday!  Yay, it’s the weekend. 🙂  Anyway, I did a makeup look awhile back that I decided would work great as a look for Valentine’s Day.  Feel free to recreate this fun and sparkly look.

Get this look:

Eyes: First, I started with a neutral brown color in e.l.f’s brightening quad eye shadow($1), all over the lid.  Second, I used Profusion’s Absolute Eyes Palette and used the dusty rose color at the corner of my eyes with e.l.f’s contouring brush. Next, I used NYX‘s Primal eye shadow in Hot Pink for $5(a steal!)  Again, I used a contouring brush and swept the hot pink shadow above my crease, I also took this color and lined my lower lashes with a damp angled brush. Make sure to blend the hot pink in the crease with an eye shadow brush, to blend out the color.  Finally, I used a gel liner and winged out my eyeliner! *Tip: I like to use an angled brush to apply gel eyeliner.  Oh and don’t forget to curl your lashes and use your favorite mascara.

Face: First, I primed my face with NYC‘s Perfecting Primer(I like that it has a shimmer to it).  I found it at Walmart for just under $4.

I’m not a fan of heavy foundation so I opted for a BB Cream.  I used Covergirl’s Tinted Moisturizer in fair to light. I also sometimes wear concealer, chose your favorite one.  I personally like e.l.f.’s Cover Everything concealer.  Don’t forget to powder your face with a big fluffy brush, I used e.l.f.’s  flawless face powder in Ivory.  Next, I used a pink blush, I chose what I had which is Mary Kay’s duo cheek color in Juicy Guava.  *Tip: I like to use the neutral shade as a highlighter above my blush, under my nose, on the chin, and by the hair line.

Lips: For the lips, I used products from Sally’s Beauty Supply.  The quality of these products weren’t the best, but it was some of the makeup I had left over from my Jem and the Holograms look from Halloween.

JemandtheHologramsCostumes

Truly, Truly Outrageous!

First, I used Beautique’s Jumbo Lip Crayon in Shocking all over my lips.  Next, I put on Sally girl mini mood lipstick in Magic Pink.  Finally, I put on Sally Girl’s Sparkle Effects loose glitter in Princess Pink all over my lips with my finger.

There you have it, a fun and flirty  Retro Inspired Valentine’s Day  makeup look!  Let me know if you recreate this look and tag me on my social media with the hashtag #retromodern so I can see your look. 🙂

Cheers,

~Ruth

1920s Fashion: Dresses.

Hello Lovelies,

How is everyone doing this lovely Monday, well actually almost Tuesday!  I promised to blog every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and I wanted to keep my promise.

Today, we’re going to dive into the 1920s fashion and I wanted to focus on one garment.  I thought dresses of this decade would be fun to look back at.

The 1920s was a memorable decade for fashion since there was more freedom in women’s fashion(especially after the war) and the clothes definitely reflected that.   A notable designer of this era was the fabulous Coco Chanel.  I know if you’re like me, you think of her perfume.

During this time, she made the two piece dress that were made out of stretchy jersey fabric that really flowed.  Below is the actress Gloria Swanson, a silent movie star rocking Coco’s design.

Another dress that was popular in the 1920s is the signature flapper style dress.  Shown below.

Another popular dress style was a dress with a dropped waist.  This style of dress was more of an everyday dress.

In the early in the 1920s, formal wear dresses were very elaborate and some had intricate beading.

In 1926, there was the straight dress, which is one of my favorite type of dresses of the 1920s!

Okay, well that was a quick look at some of the 1920s dresses worn during this fun decade!  I hope you enjoyed it.  Next Monday, there will be more fashion history.  Let me know which decade you would like to see next or a particular piece of clothing you would like me to feature.

Cheers,

~Ruth

P.S. Stay fabulous. 🙂

Fashion Interview with Tessa from House of Wonderland

Hello Lovelies,

Hope everyone is enjoying February.  I’m excited that I will be rocking it this month with blogging three times a week.  I’ve decided to blog Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Mondays will be retro fashion history aka Decades of fashion,  Wednesday will be retro beauty tips and tricks, Fridays will be OOTD Fridays.  I will also be featuring small businesses that I love as well! I’m excited to share new content with you every week.

Next, I got to connect with the lovely and talented Tessa Shearer from the House of Wonderland via #TheGirlGang on Facebook.  I am so glad I found her and this group of amazing women to connect with.  Below is our fashion interview.  🙂

Why is fashion important to you?
Fashion is so important to me as it’s what got me started in my job the first place! I was always inspired by designers, singers, and other famous icons.  It made me work really hard to pursue a career in fashion.  My earliest memory is creating a pair of shoes made from paper! 😀 I drew around my foot, cut out a strip for the strap and scrunched up a bit of paper for the high heel! I think I looked completely daft but I was so proud of myself 😀

How does it make you feel?
One word… Freedom
Wear do you go to buy your clothes or which websites do you buy from?
I make some of my clothing as well as buying plain items from cheap stores(Me too!). I do however love investing in key designer pieces, but a big splurge like that only comes once or twice a year due to my poor bank funds(I hear that!) 😀
What is the most important thing you consider when you are shopping?
The thing I think about most is coordinating clothes! I hate to spend too long getting ready so I buy lots of plain black, white, and grey clothing so whatever I put on will match! *Style tip: Doing what Tessa does gives you a chance to show off your personality with your accessories whether it be a bold necklace, leggings, or other jewelry. It will help you stand out but not over do it! 😉
If you could only wear clothing from one particular decade which one would it be and why?
It has to be 1950’s! I adore the silhouettes, styles, and class!
What are your favorite accessories to wear, i.e brands, home made, local, Etsy etc.
House Of Wonderland jewellery(I love her vintage inspired pieces) of course! 😀 But I am a sucker for Tiffany & Co!  I love long simple necklaces although I also love rockabilly necklaces too!
Side note:  Below are my faves from HOW.
HeySailorEarrings_HOW

HOW-Hey Sailor Earrings.

BettyPaigeNecklace_HOW

HOW-super cool Betty Paige necklace.

How does makeup play into how you dress?  What is your favorite makeup looks and where do you buy your makeup products?
I am so boring! I wear the same stuff every day! I usually wear foundation-liquid, powder, bronzer, blusher, 2-3 eyeshadows, eyeliner, eyebrows, eyeliner, and mascara! I love 1960’s eye make up though! I couldn’t go anywhere without my eyebrows though! Obsessed about eyebrows! I’m weird like that!
Please describe one of your favorite outfits and if possible the links to where you got the items and or descriptions.
Hmmm… My favourite outfit is one I got agggggggeeeeesss ago! I think the shop actually closed down now! But it’s a 3/4 length sleeve black top and a wrap around asymmetric black wiggle skirt? I’ll try and find a picture and enclose it 😀
TessafromHouseofWonderland
Well, that’s a wrap on today’s post!  I can’t wait to chat with you guys in the comments, below.
 Cheers,
~Ruth

New Year, New Beginnings/Liebster Award!

Hello Lovelies,

Hope you all are well this winter of 2016. I took a hiatus from blogging,  but I am gearing up to have an epic year! At least that is what my planner says. 😉

If you follow me on Instagram you would of seen my post on my planner.  My goal this year is to bring my readership up and hopefully secure sponsorship!  Along, with this goal, as a reward for my hard work I will hopefully be able to go to Blogher 16 in L.A. this summer. I’m really excited because Myiam Bialik will be there.  I know she is now on the show Big Bang Theory, which is awesome, but I will always remember her as Blossom!  I used to wear the style of hats she was famous for wearing in the 90s.

A fellow blogger, #Lauretta nominated me for a Liebster award which made me happy to be recolonized!  For those who don’t know what a Liebster is, it is an award given to fellow bloggers who have a smaller following.  It’s also a great way to connect with bloggers and to discover great blogs.  The rules: you answer the 11 questions you are given.  You can write your own questions 11 questions or keep them the same.  Next, you nominate around 5-11 blogs and let them know you nominated them.  Make sure to upload the Liebster  logo and let the nominees know you nominated them. I hope to hear back from those I nominated, enjoy!

  1. In two words, how best could you describe your personality?  Fun and passionate.
  2. What is the first thing you do before putting up a blog post?  Make sure I have my photos before I write my blog post.
  3. How long have you been blogging? I’ve been blogging since June 2015. I took a few months off. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and start blogging regularly again!
  4. What are those two things people know you for/as?  I am known for my fun and quirky personality.  I consider myself a social butterfly.
  5. If you are to have a company, what would it be?  My company would be either to have a fashion line or be a fashion consultant.
  6. How do you see today’s world?  I feel that we have made a lot of progress but we still have some changes to make.
  7. How do you see the blogging life and how has it helped you?  I love being able to share my fashion tips/tricks and show that you don’t have to have a lot of money to be fashionable.
  8. How do you do away with bad comments on your blog post or any post?  Personally, I haven’t had to deal with bad comments. I find that being a blogger, that people have been really supportive so far.
  9. If you are to open a Youtube channel what would it be and why do you chose it?  I really would love to have a Youtube channel, but I’m really nervous on how my channel would come across.  There are so many talented people out there.  If I did, it would be a fashion and beauty channel.  I would also do street interviews with people about their fashion.  I would do it because fashion gives us a way to express ourselves!
  10. What is your style signature?  My signature style is retro with a twist of modern, #retromodern.
  11. What are those three things you love about yourself?  I love my ability to be able to try new things, my passion, and my dedication.
  12. My questions:
    1. What are your goals for 2016?
    2. What inspires you the most when blogging?
    3. How long have you been blogging?
    4. What is your favorite fashion decade or throwback fashion trend do like or still wear?
    5. What is your favorite pastime/hobby?
    6. If you could travel anywhere where would it be and why?
    7. How would you describe your personality?
    8. What is your signature style?
    9. What people do you draw your creative inspiration?
    10. What is your top 3 favorite foods?
    11. What is the best thing about blogging so far?

Getting Ready with Retro Ruth!

Hello October!

Blogging in fall has been a lot harder for me than blogging in the summer.  I tend to slow down and I feel less inspired.  I promised to show you my beauty routine on my last post.  I like to maximize my time and take about 20-30 minutes to get ready.

Completed #retromodern look!

Step 1. Moisturize! I use Clinique’s Moisture Surge.  I like how light weight it is and that you can also use it as a mask.  I also use Benefit’s It’s Potent under eye cream which is great for under eye circles.

Step 2.  Prime your face.  I didn’t used to use to a primer but since I try to stay current with makeup trends and thought I would give it a try.  I saw an article on an inexpensive primer on my favorite DIY website Brit+Co and they raved about NYC’s Smooth Skin Perfecting Primer. I think it’s awesome and I like that is has a little shimmer to the product.

Step 3. Line your eyes.  I like to line my eyes before I put on other makeup in case I mess up my eyeliner. I use Mary Kay’s gel eyeliner in black.  I of course have to wing out my eyeliner. Make sure to stretch your eyelid to get a sturdy line. If you mess up, keep Q-tips handy and eye makeup remover close by.

Step 4.  Eye shadow and mascara. Now, I’m not a huge proponent for a lot of eye shadow so I like to stick to a simple routine of swiping on two main colors and then a highlight color. I like the purple shades so I use Clinique’s Twilight Mauve and Brandied Plum on my eyes.  I put the darker color on my crease and the light color above my crease. I also use a white eye shadow to highlight under my brow bone(any white will do!) Next, put on your favorite mascara, I use Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara in black. I like to use two coats and use a eyelash comb to comb through any clumps that may occur!

Step 5.  Conceal!  This is a very important step and I always use concealer even if I’m in a hurry. I like e.l.f.’s Essential Cover Everything Concealer.  This concealer is awesome and very inexpensive. I used this concealer for concealing by eyebrows last year when I was Cruella Deville for Halloween last year.  Make sure to conceal not just your under eye area but the areas that get red like under your nose, forehead, chin etc.
CruellanLeonardo_Halloween_2014

Step 6. Put on your favorite foundation or tinted moisturizer.  I’m not a big fan of foundation since I like a more natural look. My favorite product is tinted moisturizer since it’s lightweight, has SPF, and is sheer. I use Cover Girl’s tinted moisturizer BB Cream. I like to dab the product on each cheek, my forehead, chin and neck. Next, I blend the product in an upward motion.

Step 7.  Powder.  I like to use a big fluffy brush to put on my compact powder. I like e.l.f.’s Essential Flawless Face Powder in Ivory.

Step 8. Blush. I like Mary Kay’s duo blush in Juicy Guava. I like to use the light taupe color as a highlighter. I brush it on both sides of my nose and the area above where I put my blush.

Step 9. Lips. I like to use lip liner all over my lips, I like Rimmel’s Red Diva Lip liner. Next, I use a liquid red lip color, I swear by Mary Kay’s Radiant Red liquid lip color.  My new favorite is NYX’s red lipstick in Chaos

Retro Hair Style

I followed a cool retro Youtuber Vintageous to bump up my hair to the side with a couple bobby pins and hair spray. Here are her easy on the go pinup hair styles below!

Well there you have it on how I get ready! I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did. If you’re in a time crunch you can always skip a few steps.

Cheers,

~Ruth

Falling in Love with Fall.

Hello Lovelies,

I am happy to report that fall is officially here!  It always takes me a couple weeks to let the cooler weather sink in.  Anyway, today we will be diving into one of my fall looks. In my next post, I will show you how I transform into #thatretroruth on my next post(I’m making this a short but sweet post).  As always I love showing you how to be #retromodern.  Without further ado I give you my falling for fall look.

Skirt: I wore a navy blue linen skirt which is a must have! With this outfit, I kept most of my outfit neutral but added funky leggings with a bright necklace.  I found a really cute navy blue linen skirt on Etsy for $40. If you wanted a more body con shorter skirt go with the one I found on Tobi!

How to get my fun and simple look!

Leggings: There are so many fun prints to chose from when you wear neutral colors. I found some adorable floral leggings from Forever 21-$8-19. Check out my modern style board on Pinterest.

Jacket: Okay, so I’m not wearing a jacket in my photos but I absolute live in my denim jacket(this is a basic must have!) in the fall.  I’ve had my current one for 5 years(I think got mine at Khols) Any way, I prefer a medium wash denim one but it’s up to you. Forever 21 has an awesome selection.

Necklace: I found my bright pink pearl necklace on Etsy. I found a similar one on Esty. Gorgeous darling!

Bracelet: My bracelet is an heirloom from my late Aunt.  You can either get one on Ebay, Etsy, or NOVICA(associated with National Geographic) Below is my favorite!

Ring: I love turquoise jewelry.  I found an amazing conversation piece turquoise ring on Etsy for $34.50
