Getting Ready with Retro Ruth!

Hello October!

Blogging in fall has been a lot harder for me than blogging in the summer.  I tend to slow down and I feel less inspired.  I promised to show you my beauty routine on my last post.  I like to maximize my time and take about 20-30 minutes to get ready.

Completed #retromodern look!

Step 1. Moisturize! I use Clinique’s Moisture Surge.  I like how light weight it is and that you can also use it as a mask.  I also use Benefit’s It’s Potent under eye cream which is great for under eye circles.

Step 2.  Prime your face.  I didn’t used to use to a primer but since I try to stay current with makeup trends and thought I would give it a try.  I saw an article on an inexpensive primer on my favorite DIY website Brit+Co and they raved about NYC’s Smooth Skin Perfecting Primer. I think it’s awesome and I like that is has a little shimmer to the product.

Step 3. Line your eyes.  I like to line my eyes before I put on other makeup in case I mess up my eyeliner. I use Mary Kay’s gel eyeliner in black.  I of course have to wing out my eyeliner. Make sure to stretch your eyelid to get a sturdy line. If you mess up, keep Q-tips handy and eye makeup remover close by.

Step 4.  Eye shadow and mascara. Now, I’m not a huge proponent for a lot of eye shadow so I like to stick to a simple routine of swiping on two main colors and then a highlight color. I like the purple shades so I use Clinique’s Twilight Mauve and Brandied Plum on my eyes.  I put the darker color on my crease and the light color above my crease. I also use a white eye shadow to highlight under my brow bone(any white will do!) Next, put on your favorite mascara, I use Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara in black. I like to use two coats and use a eyelash comb to comb through any clumps that may occur!

Step 5.  Conceal!  This is a very important step and I always use concealer even if I’m in a hurry. I like e.l.f.’s Essential Cover Everything Concealer.  This concealer is awesome and very inexpensive. I used this concealer for concealing by eyebrows last year when I was Cruella Deville for Halloween last year.  Make sure to conceal not just your under eye area but the areas that get red like under your nose, forehead, chin etc.

Step 6. Put on your favorite foundation or tinted moisturizer.  I’m not a big fan of foundation since I like a more natural look. My favorite product is tinted moisturizer since it’s lightweight, has SPF, and is sheer. I use Cover Girl’s tinted moisturizer BB Cream. I like to dab the product on each cheek, my forehead, chin and neck. Next, I blend the product in an upward motion.

Step 7.  Powder.  I like to use a big fluffy brush to put on my compact powder. I like e.l.f.’s Essential Flawless Face Powder in Ivory.

Step 8. Blush. I like Mary Kay’s duo blush in Juicy Guava. I like to use the light taupe color as a highlighter. I brush it on both sides of my nose and the area above where I put my blush.

Step 9. Lips. I like to use lip liner all over my lips, I like Rimmel’s Red Diva Lip liner. Next, I use a liquid red lip color, I swear by Mary Kay’s Radiant Red liquid lip color.  My new favorite is NYX’s red lipstick in Chaos

Retro Hair Style

I followed a cool retro Youtuber Vintageous to bump up my hair to the side with a couple bobby pins and hair spray. Here are her easy on the go pinup hair styles below!

Well there you have it on how I get ready! I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did. If you’re in a time crunch you can always skip a few steps.

Cheers,

~Ruth

Local Beauty Products, Bees, and Grease Fashion!

Happy Sunday!  I have been falling behind on my blog posts since I had been fighting a nasty virus and sore throat, boo! Any way, today’s post is going to dive into bee awareness, what we can do to support this cause and natural beauty products you can buy. As always, I like to bring fashion into my posts, I will also show you how to rock the Sandra Dee look for the modern woman #retromodern.

Bee Awareness
First off, bees are very important to our ecosystem, it basically boils down to no bees no food!  Bees help make our food by distributing pollen. Technically, we could live without bees to pollinate our food but there wouldn’t be as much variety.  The problems that bees face today are single crop farming, removing what we call “weeds”, and the increased use of pesticides.  This unfortunately causes bees to get diseases and pests.  The good news is, there are things we can do to help the bees.  You can plant meadows instead of grass. If this doesn’t work for you, you can plant a 3′ X 3′ area with flowers that bees can pollinate spring, summer, and fall.  You can download the app Bee Smart to help you choose plants that are bee friendly! Another app you can use is Grow Smart to help you limit pests safely in your garden.

The people who made me aware of this cause was my local coffee shop NPCC.  I just happened to go for their yummy lavender latte and the event happened to be going on.  I love supporting local as much as a can.  I really enjoyed this event and I enjoyed being a part of this important cause.
While I was there I got to meet a lot of inspiring people, James a local bee keeper, Patricia Newton a local artist/photographer, and the woman(I forgot her name) who put on the event.
Patricia Newton: Local Artist/Photographer
Patrica is a local artist and photographer who loves to create paintings that incorporates nature and whimsy.  She goes to local art shows to sell her paintings. Patricia also takes beautiful pictures and has won photography contests.  She has a travel companion Peaches who is her rescue service dog that helps her with her disability.  I love that she doesn’t let her disability get in her way.

Local Beauty Products: Bee Friendly.

There were local products from LemonBuzzz(you can buy their products online) made with local honey or beeswax.  They offer homemade soaps, baths bombs, and lip balm (my favorite) Their products are made with local raw honey without artificial dyes, fragrances, or chemicals. Lemonbuzzz boasts ecofriendly packaging as well.  I highly recommend them!

James the Bee Keeper

James is a local bee keeper that is passionate about raising bees and raising awareness on the problems bees are facing.  He suggested that we buy local raw honey.  He graciously handed out clover honey sticks, yum! He also handed out Burpee’s Bee Garden seed packets which encourage pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and birds.  See above for more ways to encourage pollinators.

Fashion the “Grease” Way!

Interestingly enough, I happened to wear my vintage yellow Sandy dress to the bee event that day.. what an interesting coincidence.  I don’t know about you, but I love the movie Grease. It’s a classic that everyone should watch.  A year ago, after watching Grease for the 20th time, I wanted to find the dress like Frenchy wore during the beauty school dropout scene. I did find it here but it wasn’t my size, oh well.

Luckily, I did find a beautiful yellow cotton dress like the one Olivia Newton John famously wore. I found both dresses on Esty from an awesome seller Karen.  Below is my mini fashion shoot, enjoy. 🙂
