Falling in Love with Fall.

Hello Fashionistas,

I’m happy to report that fall is officially here!  It always takes me a couple weeks to let the cooler weather sink in.  Anyway, today we will be diving into one of my fall looks. In my next post, I will show you how I transform into my #retromodern self (I’m making this post short and sweet).  As always I love showing you how to be retro with a modern twist.  Without further ado, I give you my falling for the fall look.

How to get my fun and simple look!

Top: I this simple chic top on clearance at Khols (one of my favorite places to shop) The top is from Vera Wang’s Simply Vera Vera Collection. Here are a couple updated options to choose from: Gray Ruched Top and her Floral Applique Tee.

Skirt: I wore a navy blue linen skirt which is a must-have! With this outfit, I kept most of my outfit neutral but added some funky leggings with a bright necklace.  I found a super cute navy blue linen skirt on Etsy for $40. If you wanted a more bodycon shorter skirt, go with the one I found on Forever21!

Leggings: There are so many fun prints to chose from when you wear neutral colors. I found some adorable floral leggings from Zulily. Need more inspo? Check out my modern style board on Pinterest.

Jacket: Okay, so I’m not wearing a jacket in my photos but I absolutely live in my denim jacket (this is a closet must-have!) in the fall.  I’ve had my current one for a while now, (I think got mine at Khols) I prefer a medium wash denim one but it’s up to you. American Eagle has an awesome selection.

Necklace: I found my retro bright pink pearl necklace on Etsy. I found a similar one here on Esty. Gorgeous darling!

Bracelet: My bracelet is an heirloom from my late Aunt.  You can either get one on eBay, Etsy, or NOVICA (associated with National Geographic) Below is my favorite one!

Well, there you have it, a fun and simple fall look! I hope you got some inspiration for your fall wardrobe. Be sure to look for my post on how I achieved my hair and makeup for this look! Remember to have fun with your outfits and not to take yourself too seriously, which I’m totally guilty of.

Keep smiling, 🙂

My Retro Style with a twist of modern part 1: Mixing the decades.

Hello retro fashionistas,

It’s almost the end of summer, where did July go? Anyway, today we are going to explore my retro style with a twist of modern! I love to mix patterns and I even like mixing the different decades of fashion. Below I’m rocking a 1920s makeup with my clothes having a 1980s vibe with a pinch of modern thrown in. I was told when I wore this outfit it reminded them of the actress Molly Ringwald from the iconic 80s movie the Breakfast club! 🙂

Let’s start with my makeup, I was told to check out the awesome YouTuber and fierce body painter-Madeyewlook who creates amazing characters using body paint. I immediately loved her stuff especially her makeup tutorial about ketones, which are substances that are made when the body breaks down fat for energy when carbohydrates are low. She is a diabetic and I love how she is getting out awareness through her makeup.

My 1920s Makeup:

Moving on the my 1920s makeup, I recreated Madeyewlook’s flapper inspired makeup.

This makeup took a lot of blending, it took me multiple tries to get the eyes just right.  The pics with my hair down are my 1st attempt with this look.  I modernized this makeup by adding some sparkly pink eyeliner on the bottom of my lower lashes to give it a modern twist, plus I love glitter!

Makeup Details:  For the eyes, I used Hard Candy’s sparkly pink eyeliner on my lower lash line (I think this color is discontinued).  My black eyeshadow is from the Balm’s face palette: Balmbini Volume 2, but you can use any black eyeshadowMy eyeliner is Mary Kay’s black gel liner.  For my eyebrows, I used the black shadow from Balmbini with an angled brush. For my lipstick, I used Rimmel’s Red Diva lip liner all over. You can also use NYX‘s lip pencil as well.  I made sure to blot my lips and then reapply to get more payoff. Next, I used Revlon’s bold red lipstick.  To add a hint of shine I dusted NYC’s sparkly pink eye dust on my lower lip. For my base, I used e.l.f.’s Concealer to touch up any imperfections after filling in my eyebrows with black eyeshadow. I don’t use foundation so I skipped that part and went straight to powder, again I used e.l.f.’s  pressed powder with a fluffy brush!  For blush, I used Mary Kay’s duo mineral cheek blush in Juicy Guava to finish the look.

Check out my fun nails. 🙂 My floral nail art is Revlon’s 3D Jewel Appliques-Wildflowers, Vintage Vibe.  I love this product because you get 18 nail stickers including a nail file, buffer, and cuticle stick. My red nails are from Sally’s Red Fire! Fire! nail polish.

My scent:  I like mixing scents, so I sprayed on my signature scent: Davidoff’s Cool Water in the air and walked into the mist.  I then dabbed on MaryKay’s scent Belara on my pulse points.  In the morning, I used Bath & Body Works Wild Honeysuckle body lotion.

My grey lace top is from Kohls that I scored last fall.  I found a similar one from H&M and a higher end version from Dillards on Shopstyle.

My skirt is from Forever 21.  I love their clothing and accessories.  The quality isn’t the best but I love that you can rock current or flash back looks inexpensively!  I couldn’t find my exact skirt but I found a similar one on H&M. This skirt comes in purple or black. I personally like purple version. 🙂 After digging, I found a cute black lace skirt from Forever 21.  If you truly want to go vintage I found an awesome blue lace skirt on Etsy.

My Tights:

I scored mine at Target which is, of course, one of my favorite stores.  I found some similar on Amazon from Hue.

My Earrings:

My duct tape purple earrings are my DIY from the inspirational Brit from Brit+Co.  Brit is an original DoitGurl contributor.  She now runs the DIY site that shows you how-to decorate your house, teaches you fashion and beauty hacks, as well as style inspiration. You can buy kits on Brit+Co if you don’t have the time to spend shopping for DIY supplies.  I highly recommend them! Below is the how to video on how to make your own duct tape feather earrings.

My brown feather earrings I found at Fuego ages ago.  This is one of my favorite stores. 🙂 I couldn’t find them online but I found MySoulAfire‘s Etsy shop.  She handcrafts them and your supporting an independent artist, bonus!

My Bracelets:

I found my braided bracelet on clearance from H&M.  Again, I couldn’t find the exact one but I found some other cool bracelets that would work to recreate my outfit! First, I wanted to shout out Forever Tied Together on Etsy.  This shop is run by a young lady named Ana, she is currently on a mission to Honduras.  Ana makes one of a kind friendship bracelets. Please visit her shop. 🙂  I also found another cool place for handmade bracelets on Facebook.

have always loved fashion even as a little girl.  I have to admit fashion was an escape. My family didn’t have a lot of money, they both worked hard.  Even though I didn’t come from a rich family, I was always drawn to clothing with bright colors, fun patterns, different textures, shine, and glitter. I especially loved mixing patterns. I remember instead of playing in the dirt (ew!) I hung out with the adults in my family.  During the summers, I was hanging out with my grandmother Maxine (she was a super classy lady who always wore red lipstick) she would take me to garage sales to show me how to get a good bargain. I loved that she wasn’t just the typical homemaker- she was social, fashionable, and she kept everyone connected.  It was hard when she passed away. As an adult, there is a small part of me that wishes I would have played in the dirt, but I digress! Flash forward to the early ’90s, when I was about 10 or 11, I was reading high fashion magazines. One of my favorite magazines was Harper’s Bazaar.

I was always trying to recreate high fashion looks. Below is one of my pulled together fashion looks.

Fashionista in Training!

Fashionista in training.

Okay, the shirt is iffy but remember folks, I grew up in a very conservative river town in western IL.  I think I was pretty fashion forward for the region.  Anyway, I don’t know if anyone remembers this, but for a short while in the ’90s, it was reported that bell bottoms were back IN!  I know some of you are like: “What bell bottoms?!”  In the small town I grew up in the latest fashion trends took a while to arrive. Anyway, I found these really cool black bell bottom leggings on the clearance rack at Bergner’s the local fashion inspiration go to spot! I paired it with a light denim chambray shirt tied up in the front, which screamed the ’90s.

My point is to use what you’ve got and flaunt it.

All my best,

~Ruth
